Chief U.S. District Judge Federico Moreno has been honored by the Notre Dame Law Association.
Moreno, who graduated from Notre Dame in 1974 with an undergraduate degree, received the St. Thomas More Award on April 12 for graduates who have distinguished themselves as jurists or public servants “while exhibiting uncompromising integrity and loyalty to conscience.”
The native of Venezuela received his law degree from the University of Miami.
Moreno was appointed to the federal bench by President George H.W. Bush in 1990 after serving in Miami-Dade Circuit Court and as an assistant federal public defender.
He was the inspiration for the character D-Bob in the 1993 movie “Rudy,” who had 27 seconds of play as a fifth-string defensive player for the Fighting Irish.
Moreno and the real life Rudy lived in adjacent dorm rooms in 1973. Moreno’s character was played by actor Jon Favreau.
