When he's not writing legal briefs, Akerman Senterfitt shareholder Larry Silverman is penning an emotional blog, jacobsrecuperation.blogspot.
Silverman started the blog six years ago after his son Jacob, then 6, nearly died from E. coli poisoning. The blog began as a way for Silverman to update all his friends, family and colleagues about his son's condition. But it soon became much more to Silverman — an emotional outlet and a way for him to inject some humor into a difficult situation.
"It became an outlet for me. It was entertaining," Silverman said. "One day I tried to write three pages in haiku. One day I found 50 ways to inject the names of Tom Cruise movies. I learned how to Photoshop. It's an opportunity to stay sane."
Hundreds logged on to follow Jacob's progress as his kidneys failed, he underwent dialysis, he got a kidney transplant from his mother Jennifer and suffered seven strokes.
"I've learned that a 6-year-old can shake off seven strokes way better than an adult," Silverman said. "I'm an eternal optimist, but any parent who has been through what we've been through has doubts."
Jacob spends several days a month at the Joe DiMaggio Children's Hospital in Hollywood and will eventually need another kidney. But he is attending sixth grade and otherwise normal, his dad said.
Silverman again turned to "blog therapy" when he was seriously injured in a bike accident in 2010 in North Miami. His blog, larrysrecuperation.blogspot, detailed how he broke 21 bones, spent two weeks in intensive care and fully recovered.
Silverman is one of several Akerman partners who blog.
Fort Lauderdale shareholder Dee Dee Fischer pens her feminist blog girlinabar.com, Miami associate Ryan Roman authors the food blog Miami Restaurant Power Rankings, and Miami labor and employment shareholder Richard Tuschman contributes to several legal blogs including Forbes "Let's Talk Shop."
