A 3rd District Court of Appeal ceremony celebrating the appointment of Judge Linda Ann Wells’ as chief judge hit an awkward moment.
During a speech by outgoing Chief Judge Juan Ramirez Jr., he apparently forgot Judge Angel Cortiñas’ name and forgot Judge Barbara Lagoa entirely.
An appellate lawyer who attended Thursday’s reception said Ramirez went to introduce Cortiñas but stopped short. Cortiñas held up his name placard as a visual aid. The lawyer said the encounter was jovial.
Wells is the appellate court’s first female chief judge. Two other women currently sit on the court, and only five women have ever reached the court. Since the court’s inception, 28 men have served.
