Gov. Rick Scott will soon get to make his first appointment to the 3rd District Court of Appeal.
Thee list of applicants includes seven judges and eight attorneys.
Miami-Dade Circuit Judge Jennifer Bailey, who heads the civil division and headed a Florida foreclosure commission, is competing for the spot with colleagues including Circuit Judge Jose Rodriguez, who will soon replace a dozen senior judges when he takes over a foreclosure-only division this summer.
Circuit Judge Ivan Fernandez of the family division is again vying for a spot on the appellate court after losing out to fellow Judge Kevin Emas last year.
County court judges applying to replace retiring Judge David M. Gersten are Norma Lindsey and Gladys Perez from the civil division and Maria Ortiz from criminal court.
The only judge applying from outside Miami-Dade is Kathryn S. Pecko, who presides over a workers compensation court in Lauderdale Lakes.
More than half the applicants are attorneys: appellate attorney Bambi Blum; federal prosecutor Jonathan Colan; government law attorney Gail Dotson; former state prosecutor Michael H. Galex of Walton Lantaff Schroeder & Carson; Fowler White Burnett appellate attorney Esther E. Galicia; Ivy Ginsburg, an appellate specialist for Dutton Law Group; and Thomas Logue, who handles appeals as an assistant county attorney. Edwin Scales III, a Key West lawyer and a member of The Florida Bar board of governors who also sought the spot filled by Emas, is back in the running as well.
