It’s Harley to the rescue.
Conrad & Scherer is bringing in Harley Tropin from Kozyak Tropin & Throckmorton to help pursue Scott Rothstein in civil court to recover money lost is his sham investment Ponzi scheme.
Tropin, a partner at the Coral Gables firm, is well-suited for the job. He was once a receiver for what was the largest Florida Ponzi scam to date: Premium Sales in the mid-1990s. Tropin’s receivership was a North Miami wholesale grocery scheme that cost investors $265 million.
Times have changed when it comes to scamming the public. Rothstein went for the really big bucks. He pleaded guilty in his $1.2 billion scheme based on financing bogus settlements and has been sentenced to 50 years in prison.
Conrad & Scherer founding partner William Scherer said Kozyak Tropin will provide the additional expert attorneys and support staff needed to pursue the complex case.
"By working together we will be able to unravel this huge Ponzi scheme and recover more funds for the defrauded investors," Scherer said.
Tropin said he is looking forward to getting his hands dirty in what is sure to be some dramatic litigation. The lawsuit on behalf of some Rothstein investors is seeking to recover $160 million.
