Why won’t sharks attack lawyers? Professional courtesy.
What do you call 5,000 dead lawyers at the bottom of the ocean? A good start.
And the classic: How can you tell when a lawyer is lying? His lips are moving.
There are sure to be plenty of lawyer jokes next week when comedian Richard Lewis takes the stage at the annual Florida Bar conference at the Boca Raton Resort & Club.
The star of HBO’s "Curb Your Enthusiasm" will entertain Florida’s finest legal minds at Jesse’s Diner, a Friday night shindig to be hosted by outgoing Bar president Jesse Diner. While noshing on ‘50s-style malts and burgers, lawyers will be regaled by the man Comedy Central named one of the top 50 stand-up comedians of all time.
The Bar paid $55,000 to snag Lewis but was able to get enough sponsors to cover the cost, said Bar spokeswoman Francine Walker.
Not to be outdone, The Bar’s Young Lawyers Division will hold a "James Bond Dinner and Casino Night" on Thursday. Guests are asked to dress in James Bond-style formal attire with optional black tie.
On a more serious note, lawyers can attend sessions about mediation, residential foreclosure, Internet marketing, electronic evidence and "building business in a down economy."
At Thursday’s sold-out judicial luncheon, Florida Supreme Court Chief Justice Peggy Quince will give an address on the state of the judiciary, and the keynote speech will be delivered by Fred Fielding, former counsel to Presidents Ronald Reagan and George W. Bush and a member of the 9/11 Commission.
About 2,500 lawyers are expected to attend the three-day conference.
